Cancel controlled subscriptions update (audit system only)

Use the 'Cancel subscriptions' update to perform mass cancellations of nonpaid subscriptions. When a subscription is canceled by the 'Cancel subscriptions' update, it is given a status of "Canceled by publisher" ("CP"). To run this update select 'Cancel subscriptions' from the submenu 'Controlled subscriptions…' under 'Updates' on the main menu.

Use the 'Qualified Circulation' report to predict the results of running a 'Cancel subscriptions' update. The 'Qualified circulation' report uses the same filter tabs as the 'Cancel subscriptions' update and produces a report that contains most of the sections of the 'Publisher's Statement' report. By requesting that only active subscribers be included in the report and then excluding subsets of the subscribers (typically by filtering on the age of their qualification data or their responses to the qualification form), you can see the effect of removing those subscribers from your circulation.

The filter for the 'Cancel subscriptions' update has a few tabs. After the first tab, the remaining tabs are the same as the subscriber tabs on the 'Qualified circulation' report.

Publication

Enter the code for the publication for which you are canceling subscriptions. You may either type the code or right click once to select from a list of defined publication codes.

Maximum subs to cancel

The number you enter here is the maximum number of subscriptions that QuickFill will cancel no matter how large your file or which selections you make. Entering a number in this field lets you cancel an exact number of subscriptions.

You may be better off using the 'Random numbers' fields (on Subscriber 1 tab of the 'Cancel subscriptions' update) in addition to the 'Maximum subs to cancel' field to select a subset of your subscribers. Why? Say you have 1,000 controlled subscriptions with the tracking code "CNTR01," and you want to cancel 500 of them. If you select the first 500 subscriptions using the 'Tracking code' and 'Maximum subs to cancel' fields, your canceled subscriptions may include a disproportionate number of low-numbered zip codes, especially if the subscriptions were originally entered in zip code sequence. By choosing subscribers with random numbers from 0 to 49, you can randomize your selection. At a later date you can select the other half of the subscribers by choosing numbers from 50 to 99.
