The formatted address and postal presort customer export formats (as well as the mail-merge bill, order acknowledgement, and renewal formats) provide a "constructed" salutation if the salutation field of the customer record is blank. If the salutation field is blank and there is a last name for the customer, QuickFill uses the prefix you entered in the 'Prefix' field of the customer's record, plus a space and the last name—for example, "Mr. Smith." If the salutation and the prefix fields are blank, QuickFill uses "Subscriber" for the salutation. If the salutation, prefix, and last name fields are blank, QuickFill uses "Subscriber" for the salutation. The other output formats provide the contents of the salutation field as is, without constructing any default values from the prefix or last name.
You can tell whether or not the salutation field in your file is a constructed salutation or a salutation from the 'Salutation' field in the customer's record by the field name and length. The constructed salutation has a field name of "SALUTATN" and a length of "43" while the salutation from the customer's record has a field name of "SALUTATION" and a length of "15."
